Ashley Webb, a trans and intersex activist seeking to secure the Democratic nomination for a Maine Senate seat, has gained viral attention following an unconventional response to a debate question about their qualifications. Webb is vying to replace Graham Platner, who withdrew from the race amid serious sexual abuse allegations.
During a debate on Thursday, July 16, 2026, a moderator asked Webb to explain their qualifications for the office. Webb responded by citing previous unsuccessful campaign attempts, their work as a songwriter and author, and a commitment to transparency. "I wouldn’t lie to the people, and I wouldn’t deceive the people like we’re being deceived right now. Like we’re getting lied, like smoke and mirrors," Webb stated during the debate. They also referenced ongoing issues with ICE, suggesting a need to correct perceived deceptions.
Webb further described themselves as an "angry citizen" and suggested that electing them would result in an "angry senator," which they posited would be their opponents' "worst nightmare."
The vacancy in the Democratic field arose after Platner exited the race. The party has faced turmoil as it seeks a new candidate to contest the election.
