A passenger train derailed in East Sussex on August 13, 2026, trapping passengers in overturned carriages. The eight-carriage train came off the tracks between Haywards Heath and Lewes at approximately 3:54 p.m. local time.

More than 40 people are thought to be aboard the train, with three carriages overturned. Emergency services, including paramedics and the fire service, are on the scene providing first aid. The extent of any injuries is currently unknown.

Southern Railway confirmed that all lines running through the affected station are closed, and services are expected to be cancelled until 10 p.m. Network Rail stated that no trains will be able to run between Haywards Heath and Lewes until further notice. This disruption is expected to cause significant delays, with passengers advised to allow extra travel time.

Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander expressed deep concern over the incident on social media platform X, stating, "Grateful to emergency services who are on the scene supporting those impacted. We are working quickly with the rail industry and local partners to assist passengers." British Transport Police confirmed they are responding alongside other emergency services and will release more information as it becomes available.

Helena Dollimore, the Labour MP for Hastings and Rye, described the news as "deeply distressing" and stated she had been updated by the Secretary of State for Transport and the rail minister. Images from the scene appear to show buckled train tracks, which can occur when steel rails expand due to heat.

The incident has led to widespread disruption, with stations Cooksbridge and Plumpton also not being served until further notice. Passengers traveling in the affected area are advised to allow an additional 60 minutes for their journey, and those traveling to Gatwick Airport should allow an extra 90 minutes.
