Trail Blazers Replace Play-by-Play Voice Bell After Past Tweets Surface
Travis Demers will take over television duties on a trial basis following the dismissal of Braiden Bell.
The Portland Trail Blazers have dismissed television play-by-play announcer Braiden Bell due to past tweets containing misogynistic and racist remarks, OregonLive reported. Travis Demers, who has served as the team's radio play-by-play voice for seven seasons, will step in as the interim television announcer.
Demers is set to call games on a game-by-game basis alongside color analyst Lamar Hurd and courtside reporter Brooke Olzendam. He reportedly impressed team decision-makers during Portland's preseason opener against the Golden State Warriors.
The team is reportedly keeping its options open as they evaluate their broadcast talent. Bell, 29, was hired and subsequently fired on the same day after offensive remarks he made as a teenager resurfaced. He had reportedly been chosen over 10 other candidates, including veteran announcer Kyle Draper, due to his perceived potential as a "rising star."
The Trail Blazers also saw the departure of veteran television play-by-play broadcaster Kevin Calabro this offseason. Calabro, who had been with the team for 10 years, left in July after receiving what he described as a "subprime" contract offer from new owner Tom Dundon. He has since been hired by the Minnesota Timberwolves in a limited capacity.
Demers has previously worked with the Hillsboro Hops and the University of Portland, and hosted radio programs for SiriusXM College Sports Nation and NBC Sports Northwest.
