Tractor Supply Plans to Open Up to 90 New Stores in 2027 Amid Expansion

Tractor Supply Company, the largest rural lifestyle retailer in the United States, has announced plans to open approximately 85 to 90 new locations in 2027. This expansion follows the company's recent closure of 75 underperforming Petsense stores.

Kurt Barton, CFO of Tractor Supply Company, stated during the company's latest earnings call that the economics for new stores remain attractive. While the initial target was 100 new locations, the company is moderating its growth to focus on larger store formats. These new stores will feature expanded garden centers and outdoor supply sections, reflecting a shift in strategic priorities.

Real estate acquisition and development expert Jason Miller noted that many of Tractor Supply's new and recently opened stores are in "second generation" real estate, meaning they were previously occupied by other retailers. As an example, approximately one-fourth of the company's new store openings in the first quarter of 2026 utilized repurposed Big Lots sites, following Tractor Supply's acquisition of 19 of the bankrupt retailer's leases in May 2025. One such repurposed location in Lakeland, Florida, measured nearly 40,000 square feet, significantly larger than the typical Tractor Supply store.

The company is also enhancing its digital capabilities. This includes expanding its digital delivery and final mile services to better handle bulky orders such as chicken coops and fencing materials. By 2030, the final mile program is projected to handle about 95% of large-item orders. Additionally, Tractor Supply aims to upgrade its "Buy Online, Pick Up In Store" (BOPIS) and curbside pickup services, as approximately 80% of its online orders are currently fulfilled by in-store pickup.

These planned openings will bring Tractor Supply's total store count to approximately 2,600 locations, up from its current fleet of about 2,500 stores.
