Trace Gallagher Shares Parenting Wisdom: 'Shut Up and Listen'

For broadcast news anchor Trace Gallagher, a career built on knowing what to say has led to a profound parenting lesson: the power of silence. Gallagher, Fox News' chief breaking news correspondent, shared that the most effective tool in raising daughters in today's complex world is to "shut up and listen."

In his new book, "Turns Out They Were Right All Along," Gallagher details his journey as a father to two daughters, now in their mid-twenties. He found that his initial instinct to offer solutions or advice was often counterproductive. Instead, his daughters primarily sought to be heard and to have their feelings acknowledged.

"When they have a problem, they don’t really want you to talk to them about their problem. They just want you to hear them about the problem," Gallagher explained. "You need to sit, you need to shut up and you need to listen."

Gallagher contrasted this approach with his own childhood experience. When he wanted to quit football at age eight, his mother, nicknamed "Big Red," did not offer direct intervention. Instead, she instructed him to go to practice and tell the coach himself. This experience taught him the value of confronting challenges directly and persevering.

He recalled this incident: "I walk on to the practice field and the coach looks at me, and he blows the whistle three times, and then he screams at me, 'Gallagher! You're late! Give me five laps.'"

After enduring the demanding drills, Gallagher was eventually allowed to play and discovered a love for the sport, continuing to play through college. He credits his coach's firm approach and his mother's indirect guidance for fostering his resilience and character.

Gallagher believes this lesson in facing adversity is crucial for young people today. "If you want to do something, if you want to quit something, you need to do it. You need to fight your own battles," he stated.

The anchor also shared an anecdote about supporting his youngest daughter during a youth soccer game. After she took a fall, Gallagher offered simple reassurance: "Hey, it's all good. You know, it'll be fine." His daughter went on to score a goal minutes later, and Gallagher noted the comfort derived from knowing a parent is attentively present.

"It is soothing for them to know that somebody is really paying close attention," he said. This active, quiet presence, he added, fosters a sense of security in daughters.

Gallagher's book explores these themes, emphasizing that valuable guidance can emerge from unexpected places and at unexpected times. His core advice for parents and individuals alike is simple yet profound: "Listen to people. Hear them out."
