Tourists Stranded on Oregon Beach After Photo Attempt Canceled by Tides
Three individuals became trapped on Lost Boy Beach in Tillamook County while attempting to capture a dramatic photograph, requiring rescue by emergency services.
A group of three tourists found themselves stranded on an Oregon beach Wednesday after rising tides cut off their access while they were attempting to take a photograph. The incident occurred at Lost Boy Beach in Tillamook County, an area known for its picturesque but potentially hazardous access.
The tourists had descended to the cove, which requires navigating a rocky path and an open-ended sea cave, to capture a "dramatic" photo, according to The Oregonian. However, they failed to account for the incoming tide, which subsequently blocked their only exit route.
Authorities were alerted around 3:45 p.m. after one of the stranded individuals managed to make a 911 call using a satellite phone, as there was no cellular service in the area. Tillamook Fire Chief Jeff McBrayer emphasized the importance of checking tide information, stating that stranded individuals may be inaccessible to rescuers.
Upon arrival, rescuers observed that the tourists had spelled out "SOS" using sticks on the remaining patch of dry land. A drone was deployed to assess the situation before a rescue crew was dispatched.
Firefighters braved large waves and rough waters to reach the group, who were cold and wet. The tourists were subsequently led through the surf with life vests before being able to safely exit the cove on foot. All three were unharmed, though they sustained some bruises.
McBrayer expressed hope that the incident would encourage greater caution among visitors exploring Oregon's beaches.
