A Brazilian tourist reported a distressing experience at a restaurant in Romagna, Italy, where she received a receipt with a vulgar message after asking for her eggs to be more thoroughly cooked.
Maria Clara told Italian newspaper Corriere that she politely requested her eggs be cooked longer, as they were too runny. According to Clara, she was met with a rude response and told the restaurant did not serve raw eggs. While the eggs ultimately arrived soft, she did not ask for them to be remade.
Upon reviewing the receipt, Clara discovered the message, which she initially mistook for a joke before becoming alarmed. She and her group requested to speak with a manager. Initially, they were told no manager was available, but another waitress then brought the manager to their table.
The employee who wrote the note, identified as a 17-year-old, appeared visibly nervous and apologized, claiming it was an inside joke between him and the chef. Clara stated that the teenager attempted to retrieve and discard the receipt, but she and her group insisted he not do so, threatening to contact the police.
Clara emphasized her initial request was made politely and that she had not been rude. She recounted that the situation escalated when she later discovered the restaurant had posted a video on TikTok that appeared to mock the incident. The video featured the owner playing the role of a demanding customer ordering a dish with 'spit.' A poll was also shared, questioning whether the employee should be rehired.
The incident drew a significant reaction online, with some users expressing support for the employee and others condemning the restaurant's actions. Some individuals who claimed to be current or former restaurant workers shared that they had, in fact, spat on food for irritating customers, adding a disturbing dimension to Clara's experience.
Clara reported receiving death threats and racist comments after the story gained traction online. She maintained that regardless of a customer's demeanor, the act of food contamination by staff should not be a concern.
