Toto Wolff Dismisses Online Claims of Favouritism Within Mercedes

Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff has strongly criticized individuals he described as "lunatics hiding behind screens" for alleging favoritism towards driver Kimi Antonelli over George Russell. Wolff made these remarks ahead of the Singapore Grand Prix, dismissing the accusations as baseless and "hilarious."

Wolff questioned the logic behind such claims, stating, "Do they think I have a button which says, ‘George engine failure now?’ This is where social media goes, people hiding behind their screens. There is a lot of polarization going on."

He expressed a lack of understanding and respect for those who propagate these accusations, suggesting they "watch Teletubbies or Mickey Mouse" instead of Formula One. Wolff emphasized his commitment to maintaining balance and transparency with drivers, a challenge he noted was present even during the Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg era.

"Integrity and respect is something that is important for me," Wolff stated. He highlighted Antonelli's long-standing connection with the team, having been with Mercedes since he was 11, and acknowledged his integral role and impressive development.

Regarding George Russell, Wolff conveyed deep emotion and compassion, noting their close personal relationship, which extends to their families. He described traveling and spending time together with Russell's fiancée, Carmen, and his wife, Susie, off the track.

"That is why it is annoying to have lunatics with no understanding of how the relationship works coming up with these kinds of accusations," Wolff said. He concluded by emphasizing that both Russell and Antonelli are aware of the team's internal dynamics.

Russell is currently 84 points behind Antonelli in the standings, with seven races potentially remaining on the calendar. The scheduling of the final races in the Middle East is subject to change due to the ongoing conflict in the region.
