Tory Chairman Mocks Labour Minister's Remarks on Country Life with Beer and Dog

Tory chairman Kevin Hollinrake playfully embraced the image of country life by enjoying a morning pint of warm beer alongside a labrador at the Conservative party conference, a gesture seen as a retort to a Labour minister's recent remarks.

Hollinrake, on stage at the conference at 10:15 a.m. with Zuzu the labrador, told activists, "Everywhere I go, people tell me how much they love Kemi, including in my local pub, that place where I go to drink my far-right fantasy pint. With my far-right fantasy black lab."

The comments from Hollinrake were a direct response to Nature Minister Jenny Riddell-Carpenter, who stated at a fringe event during Labour's party conference that a pint of bitter and gun dogs represented a "far-Right nostalgic vision of Britain that never really existed."

Riddell-Carpenter had expressed concerns that the far-right could seek to "weaponise the countryside" in the next election, depicting it as a scene of "warm ale, a black Labrador by your feet in a pub that doesn't exist, and with symbolism of fox hunting all around them."

She argued that Labour would instead champion a "progressive" perspective on rural issues. However, she later attempted to clarify her remarks, telling the East Anglian Daily Times that she did not believe black Labradors, pints, or pubs were inherently "far-right." She conceded that she had not articulated her point clearly enough, emphasizing that rural Britain faces significant challenges in areas such as education, transport, connectivity, and the cost of living.
