Tories Unveil Deregulation Plan to Revitalize Economy
Shadow Chancellor Andrew Griffith announces 'biggest deregulation project in a generation' aiming to cut costs and simplify tax.
The Conservative Party plans to challenge the prevailing large-state approach in Britain by proposing significant deregulation, including cuts to Net Zero initiatives and the abolition of quangos, as outlined by Shadow Chancellor Andrew Griffith.
Griffith is set to introduce what is described as "the biggest deregulation project in a generation," aimed at stimulating the U.K. economy and reducing prices. This initiative is being presented as a counterpoint to policies perceived as reminiscent of 1970s socialism.
Key proposals include the streamlining of regulations by abolishing bodies such as the Environment Agency and Natural England, which are viewed as impediments to economic growth. Additionally, the party intends to eliminate Labour's proposed 'grocery tax' on packaging, a measure estimated to cost businesses and consumers £1.5 billion. The Conservatives also plan to formally support the expansion of Heathrow Airport with a third runway.
Griffith is expected to address party activists, stating, "No one else is coming to save our economy. Only we can inject reality, tell the hard truths and make this a country we are proud to hand on to the next generation." He further characterized the current political direction as a "Prime Minister that wants to return Britain to an imagined past. A socialist fever dream of the 1970s." The platform promises "cheaper homes, lower taxes, and less red tape."
Kemi Badenoch, a Conservative figure, has reportedly urged party members to prepare for a potential snap election. She has expressed a desire to emulate Margaret Thatcher's approach by governing on right-wing principles, suggesting that a lack of a clear ideological framework has left Britain susceptible to external events. The party is reportedly seeking to build on a recent upturn in its fortunes amid challenges faced by the Reform Party.
