Tories Ready for Pre-Christmas Election, Badenoch States
Conservative Party instructed to prepare for potential snap poll as opposition faces internal turmoil.
Conservative Party leader Kemi Badenoch has instructed her party to be prepared for a general election before the end of the year, signaling readiness for a pre-Christmas snap poll amid mounting speculation. Badenoch stated, "I've instructed the Conservative Party to be ready for an election at any point."
Badenoch expressed skepticism regarding opposition leader Andy Burnham's recent assertion that an election would not occur soon. She believes Burnham might call a snap election while enjoying a favorable poll bounce and while the Green Party and Liberal Democrats are perceived to be in disarray.
The Green Party has faced recent setbacks, including leader Zack Polanski's failure to win a by-election and declining poll ratings. Similarly, Liberal Democrat leader Sir Ed Davey is reportedly facing pressure to save his position.
A senior Conservative source indicated that the party anticipates an election sooner rather than later, potentially before the year concludes. Badenoch's strategists were reportedly on alert during the Labour Party conference, anticipating a possible election announcement. The Conservative Party has been holding election meetings since July and has a draft manifesto and campaign plan in place.
Badenoch outlined her party's stance, stating, "When that election comes there will be a simple choice between Conservative plans to get Britain working again and a Labour party that keeps putting up taxes, refuses to cut welfare and won't fund our defence."
Badenoch's team has been encouraged by the reception to her recent conference speech, which emphasized traditional Conservative themes such as lower taxes and home ownership, including a proposal to abolish inheritance tax on primary residences.
While Burnham is not legally required to call an election until 2029, potential left-wing policies discussed, such as a national care service, could necessitate tax increases that conflict with the 2024 manifesto. Economic challenges and the upcoming budget also present difficulties in fiscal management.
The Conservative Party is reportedly targeting a voter demographic described as "Waitrose Woman," characterized as aspirational, hardworking, and seeking lower taxes.
Meanwhile, Reform UK is also preparing for a potential snap election, bolstering its campaign by appointing a defense spokesman with a military background and seeking other figures from private industry and the public sector. Reform UK leader Nigel Farage is also launching a new newspaper, "The Reformer," to distribute his message more widely.
Recent polling suggests that an election held now could result in Labour winning 313 seats, the Conservatives 123, and Reform UK 95. This outcome would leave Labour short of an overall majority but potentially able to form a coalition government with the Liberal Democrats.
