Tories Accuse Labour of Dictating Migration Policy
Conservative critics claim Angela Rayner is now influencing Britain's migration policy after Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood hinted at softening reforms.
Conservative politicians have accused Labour of allowing Angela Rayner to dictate Britain's migration policy, following comments made by Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood that suggest a potential shift in controversial immigration reforms. The Tories claim Ms. Mahmood has "surrendered" to pressure from the left wing of the Labour party, with Ms. Rayner, the Housing Secretary, reportedly being a key figure in influencing the policy.
Ms. Mahmood, in a speech at the Labour conference this week, indicated a possible revision of proposals that would extend the waiting period for migrant workers to gain indefinite leave to remain (ILR) in Britain. Currently, the waiting period is five years, but reforms under consideration would increase it to up to 15 years. Ms. Mahmood stated her intention to "come to a position that balances fairness," which has been interpreted as a signal of a concession.
Chris Philp, the Conservative shadow home secretary, criticized the potential move, telling The Sun that Ms. Mahmood was poised to "surrender to the forces on the Left, led by Angela Rayner." He added, "Angela Rayner is now dictating Britain's migration policy. And I think it's an act of weakness, of surrender, that Shabana Mahmood's apparently given in."
Mr. Philp also outlined his own party's stance, expressing a desire for "net negative migration," meaning more people would leave Britain than arrive annually. He suggested deporting low-wage migrants who earn less than £30,000 once their temporary work visas expire.
Prime Minister Andy Burnham, however, has downplayed suggestions that Ms. Mahmood's visa changes might be abandoned due to Ms. Rayner's views. Responding to questions about supporting either Ms. Mahmood or Ms. Rayner, Mr. Burnham told LBC, "I'm both of them, I'm Team Angela and Shabana." He explained that the government is in a consultation process and is considering a range of views.
A Labour source countered the Conservative claims by stating, "The Tories surrendered control of our borders. This Labour Government is restoring control with net migration down over 80 per cent and small boats down over 40 per cent."
