Commuters in Santa Ana, California, experienced significant delays Monday evening when a topless woman climbed onto a freeway sign platform over the 55 Freeway. The incident occurred during the evening rush hour, leading to the closure of both northbound and southbound lanes near an overpass south of 17th Street.

Authorities from the California Highway Patrol and the Orange County Fire Authority worked for more than two and a half hours to resolve the situation. Rescuers set up a cushion below the sign and utilized a fire ladder in an attempt to coax the woman down. At one point, the woman reportedly threatened to jump from the sign.

Ultimately, the woman stepped into the arms of first responders on a raised platform. She was subsequently transported to a local hospital for a mental health evaluation, according to the Santa Ana Police Department. The department stated on Facebook that crisis negotiation team members were instrumental in convincing the woman to surrender. Officials expressed gratitude for public patience during the incident and commended the safe resolution.

It remains unclear whether the woman will face any charges. Santa Ana is located approximately 32 miles southeast of downtown Los Angeles.
