Kolby Lee, communications director for Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass, has resigned from his position after five months, becoming the latest senior staffer to depart the mayor's press operation. Lee announced his resignation Tuesday, stating he intends to spend more time with his family.

Bass's office acknowledged Lee's contributions and wished him and his family well. Sergio Godinez, Deputy Press Secretary for Bass, thanked Lee for his service.

Lee's tenure was marked by his efforts to navigate the mayor's office through several challenging crises, including the significant warehouse fire in Boyle Heights, ongoing recovery efforts following the Pacific Palisades fire, and issues related to homelessness. Prior to joining Bass's team, Lee served as a spokesperson for presidential candidate Bernie Sanders.

Lee's departure continues a pattern of considerable turnover within the mayor's communications department since Bass took office. Longtime communications chief Zach Seidl left in October, followed by Press Secretary Clara Karger in January. Amanda Crumley, hired as deputy mayor of communications, resigned after just over two months, citing a desire for better work-life balance.

Samuel Jean was brought in to assist with messaging during a transition period after Seidl's departure, but his role eventually became unclear. Lee was hired in February with the goal of stabilizing the communications office.

During Lee's time, Mayor Bass also received pro bono communications advice from outside political strategist Yusef Robb. Robb reportedly advised on high-profile issues, including communications surrounding the Palisades wildfire recovery. According to reports, Robb was simultaneously working as a crisis communications consultant for Lineage Logistics, the company involved in the Boyle Heights warehouse fire.
