Top Admiral Briefs Trump on Iran Attack Options Ahead of Midterms

President Donald Trump has been briefed by Admiral Brad Cooper, America's top Middle East commander, on potential attack options to resume military action against Iran. The meeting, which took place at the White House on Thursday, also included Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and General Dan Caine, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. Cabinet members were reportedly present to discuss considerations for continuing the U.S. blockade in the region.

US officials have communicated to several Middle Eastern countries the possibility of renewed military action against Iran after the midterm elections, alongside warnings of potential Iranian retaliation. These allies have been advised that a new round of military action could span several days and have been urged to implement precautionary measures anticipating retaliatory strikes on energy facilities and critical infrastructure.

This development follows the dismissal of Army Lt. Gen. Brett Sylvia, the Pentagon's top military planner, by Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth. Sylvia was removed from his position as head of strategy, plans and policy on the Joint Chiefs of Staff amidst an investigation into alleged leaks of classified information concerning the wars in Iran and between Russia and Ukraine. A Department of Defense official stated that Sylvia reportedly failed three polygraph tests related to the leaks and that the investigation has been referred to the Department of Justice. The official emphasized that Hegseth took "immediate action" to dismiss Sylvia to protect national security, citing the critical nature of the alleged leaks. However, the official also noted that Sylvia was not the central planner for the Iran War, a responsibility held by CENTCOM and its commander, Admiral Cooper.

Sylvia's role as director of the Directorate for Strategy, Plans and Policy, also known as the J5, typically involves generating and coordinating military plans with the chairman of the Joint Chiefs and the president. It remains unclear who will succeed Sylvia. Historically, the deputy director would assume temporary duties until a presidential nominee is confirmed by the Senate. Sylvia is the second general to be ousted from the J5 position under Hegseth's tenure; his predecessor, Lt. Gen. Joseph McGee, was forced to retire in October. Approximately two dozen other generals, admirals, and military leaders have also departed under Hegseth, with most departures lacking public explanation from the Pentagon.
