NFL legend and CBS analyst Tony Romo has withdrawn from the Texas State Open golf tournament following his recent arrest for driving while intoxicated (OWI) in Milwaukee. Romo, who was previously listed as a participant in the competition at Cascades Country Club in Tyler, Texas, will no longer play, organizers confirmed to KLTV.
The former Dallas Cowboys quarterback was arrested on Thursday. According to reports, he was pulled over on a high-rise bridge around 6 p.m. and subsequently failed sobriety tests before being taken into custody. He was released from jail the same evening and is due in court on September 21. Romo has not yet publicly commented on the arrest.
Romo's participation in the Texas State Open, an event he annually attends, has been a consistent fixture. This year, he was also scheduled to take part in a pre-tournament question-and-answer session, which he has now withdrawn from as well. CBS has not yet responded to requests for comment regarding the arrest.
Romo spent his 13-season NFL career with the Cowboys, leading the team to four postseason appearances. He retired from football after the 2016 season and transitioned to broadcasting, becoming the lead color analyst for NFL on CBS, entering his 10th season in the role this fall. He earns $18 million annually for his broadcasting work.
Prior to his arrest, Romo had participated in the Wisconsin Amateur Championship, held approximately 37 miles from Milwaukee. He finished the tournament tied for 73rd place. Romo, who grew up in Burlington, Wisconsin, was a multi-sport athlete in high school, earning all-state honors in football, basketball, and golf. A field at his former high school was named in his honor in February 2020.
