Tony Romo's Difficult Day: Parts Ways With CBS, Disqualified From Golf Qualifier

Former Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo experienced a difficult professional day, parting ways with CBS Sports and subsequently being disqualified from a Korn Ferry Tour pre-qualifier event.

The split from CBS Sports, where Romo served as a lead football analyst, was announced in early October. The network had previously placed him on indefinite leave following an arrest over the summer for operating a vehicle while intoxicated in Wisconsin.

On the same day news broke of his departure from CBS, Romo was disqualified from a Korn Ferry Tour pre-qualifier tournament. The event took place at the Club at Forest Ridge in Broken Arrow, Oklahoma. Romo had completed the first 36 holes with scores of 76 and 75, placing him 13 strokes behind the leaders but still within a position to potentially advance.

The disqualification stemmed from an alleged incorrect scorecard during the third round. Romo's scorecard indicated he scored a 4 on the 16th hole and a 4 on the 17th. However, his playing partner and marker, Brandon Rice, recorded a 5 for the 17th hole. Adding to the discrepancy, a PGA professional and walking referee overseeing the group for slow play reportedly recalled Romo scoring a 5 on both the 16th and 17th holes.

Tournament administrator Rob Keller suggested to Golf.com that Romo, possibly due to the pressure of slow play and the score deficit, did not thoroughly review his marker's scorecard. Keller also stated that Romo took responsibility for the error when they spoke, reportedly complimenting the tournament's quality.

Romo's performance in the qualifier would not have been sufficient to advance even with a corrected scorecard, but the disqualification marked another professional setback. The events of the day have raised questions about the viability of a professional golf career as a post-broadcasting pursuit for Romo.
