Tony Romo has been issued three new citations in Milwaukee, adding to the legal entanglements stemming from his July arrest on suspicion of operating a vehicle while intoxicated (OWI). The citations, which include first-offense OWI, unsafe passing on the right side, and possessing open intoxicants inside his vehicle, were filed on Thursday, according to court records. This development occurs exactly one month after Romo was cited for refusing an intoxication test following his initial arrest on July 23.
Romo, who currently serves as an NFL analyst for CBS, was pulled over by deputies after reportedly performing poorly on a field sobriety test. The 46-year-old reportedly told authorities he had not consumed alcohol and was en route to visit family after participating in the Wisconsin Amateur Championship golf tournament. An officer, however, noted an open alcoholic beverage on the passenger side of Romo's vehicle.
Following the initial arrest, CBS placed Romo on indefinite leave. CBS Sports president David Berson stated on August 11 that the situation was still being assessed with no set timetable for a decision. "It’s an evolving situation and therefore we are still assessing," Berson said. "There is no timetable or final decision at this time."
Former NFL star J.J. Watt has been brought in to replace Romo as the network's lead booth analyst during his absence. Romo is reportedly still under contract with CBS for another four years, with a significant portion of his $180 million deal remaining.
Romo is scheduled to appear in court for all four citations on September 21.
