Tony Romo Disqualified from Golf Qualifier on Same Day CBS Contract Ends

Tony Romo was disqualified from a Korn Ferry pre-qualifier tournament on Friday due to a scoring error, marking a significant day as it was also announced that his decade-long contract with CBS Sports had ended.

Romo was competing in the event with the goal of advancing to the Korn Ferry Tour's Q School, a pathway to professional golf's minor leagues. He needed to finish around par to achieve this.

However, his recorded score on his scorecard, a 74, was reportedly lower than the actual strokes he took on several holes. His playing partner, Brandon Rice, who served as the scoring marker, noted a discrepancy on the 16th hole, where Romo marked a 4 but Rice had him down for a 5. Another observer recalled Romo taking 5 strokes on both the 14th and 15th holes, a two-shot difference from what Romo recorded.

According to PGA Tour rules, signing for a score lower than what was achieved results in disqualification. Rob Keller, a PGA Tour rules official overseeing the event, confirmed the disqualification with Romo. He stated that the former quarterback accepted the ruling and was complimentary of the tournament's organization. Keller attributed the error to the rushed pace of play due to a previous warning about slow progress and the other pressures Romo was reportedly facing.

Romo's disqualification occurred on the same day it was confirmed that he and CBS Sports had settled on an early termination of his 10-year, $180 million contract. This separation follows Romo's arrest for driving under the influence in July outside Milwaukee, after playing in the Wisconsin State Amateur golf tournament. He later admitted to an "over-reliance" on alcohol as part of a plea deal.

Romo is expected to receive a substantial portion of the remaining $72 million on his CBS contract. In a statement, Romo expressed gratitude for his time at CBS and indicated a need for a break to focus on his health and family before pursuing future opportunities.
