Tony Dungy Believes Faith and Pro-Life Stance Led to NBC Departure

Legendary NFL coach and analyst Tony Dungy believes his outspoken Christian faith and pro-life stance contributed to his departure from NBC. Dungy, who served as an analyst for the network following a successful 13-year coaching career that included a Super Bowl championship with the Indianapolis Colts, stated in a recent interview with former ESPN personality Sage Steele that he suspected his public expressions of faith were not always welcomed.

During an interview on "The Sage Steele Show," Dungy explained his perspective on why his tenure with NBC concluded in early 2026. He suggested that while he aimed to express his beliefs respectfully, television networks often prefer to avoid alienating any segment of their audience. "They don't always appreciate you speaking about your faith," Dungy said. "But for me, I’m always going to do that. I'm going to try and do it in a respectful way, but people are going to know that I’m a Christian."

Dungy also referenced his participation in the "March for Life" event, which he told Steele was not well-received by NBC executives. He confirmed he had not sought permission before speaking at the event, and described the network's reaction: "And they were not happy that I went because… their point is, ‘Hey, we’ve got audience on all sides of the spectrum. We don’t want to push away anyone just making statements like that.’ And I said, ‘Well, I get it, but this is an important topic to me. I was asked to speak and because it was important to me, I did.’"

Despite the apparent friction, Dungy maintained that he would not compromise his core beliefs. "They knew where I stood. I knew where they stood… there are some things I’m not going to try to turn an audience away, but things that are important to me I’m going to talk about. If somebody asked me a question about my faith and am I a Christian, I’m not going to say no. I’m not going to shy away from it."

Dungy acknowledged that he was "pretty sure" his public sharing of his religious views was impacting his future with the network. "I was pretty sure it was. There were things that they didn't want me to talk about and we had a good understanding. They knew who I was when I got hired and, you know, it is what it is." While he believed his departure was linked to these issues, Dungy did not definitively state it as the sole reason, saying, "I don't know. And it really doesn't matter."

Steele also raised the issue of Dungy being removed from the Hall of Fame voting committee. Dungy stated he was informed the change, which reduced the committee from 50 to 25 voters, was made to streamline the process and was unrelated to his public statements.
