Tony Blair Appointed Board Adviser at Skydance Media

Former British Prime Minister Tony Blair has been appointed as a board adviser to Skydance Media, a newly formed Hollywood entertainment giant. The firm was created this week through the approximately $80 billion takeover of Warner Bros. Discovery by Paramount. Skydance Media is led by chief executive David Ellison, son of Oracle founder and billionaire Larry Ellison.

Blair's appointment comes as Skydance consolidates its position following the significant merger. The deal combines the Paramount studio, known for films like "The Godfather" and "Top Gun," with Warner Bros., responsible for franchises such as "Barbie" and "Harry Potter." The new entity also encompasses networks like CBS and CNN, and streaming services Paramount+ and HBO Max.

Skydance stated that Blair's "global leadership experience and commitment to innovation" will make him an "invaluable adviser in shaping Skydance's strategic priorities." David Ellison expressed honor in having Blair join, citing his "intellect, strategic vision and ability to bring people together around bold, forward-looking ideas," adding that Blair's "global perspective and insight will be invaluable as we turn ambition into results."

The relationship between the former Prime Minister and the Ellison family, particularly Larry Ellison, spans decades. The tech billionaire has reportedly invested hundreds of millions into Blair's policy institute. The two have been pictured together, including on Larry Ellison's yacht in 2009 and with David Ellison in February 2024.

Last autumn, reports surfaced that Blair had lobbied former business secretary Peter Kyle to meet with representatives from the Ellison Institute, highlighting its potential as a resource. Oracle, Larry Ellison's firm, stands to benefit financially from certain technology initiatives.

David Ellison announced the merger, calling it a "historic day" that will create a "stronger competitor" with the capacity to "tell great stories in every genre, on every platform, for audiences everywhere."

However, the substantial debt incurred by the deal has raised concerns about potential future streaming price increases for services like HBO Max and Paramount+. Analysts suggest that such hikes may be inevitable. Additionally, the consolidation has fueled worries about job losses among actors, writers, and behind-the-scenes staff in Hollywood, as well as potential cutbacks at news channels CNN and CBS.

Skydance, founded in 2010, has rapidly grown from an independent studio to a major player in the entertainment industry, particularly noted for its financial backing of "Top Gun: Maverick." The company's successful bid for Warner Bros. followed a competitive process that included Netflix.
