Tomlin 'Threw Up' Over Commanders-Giants Tie
Former Steelers coach Mike Tomlin described the end of the Commanders-Giants game as 'disgusting' after both teams missed opportunities to win in overtime.
NBC analyst Mike Tomlin expressed strong disappointment with the 27-27 tie between the New York Giants and the Washington Commanders, stating he "threw up in my mouth a little bit at the end of the game." Tomlin, a former Pittsburgh Steelers coach, referred to the outcome as "disgusting," emphasizing the importance of division wins in the NFL.
Both teams had chances to secure a victory in overtime with routine field goals but failed to convert. The Giants had possession first, with a first-and-10 from the Washington 24-yard line. However, instead of attempting a field goal with kicker Dominic Zvada, who had already missed three kicks earlier in the game, coach John Harbaugh opted for a run play. Running back Cam Skattebo fumbled the ball, which was recovered by Washington's Shy Tuttle.
The Commanders then had an opportunity to set up a game-winning field goal. With the ball in Giants territory, coach Dan Quinn could have had quarterback Jayden Daniels take a knee to set up a spike and subsequent kick. Instead, Quinn attempted to advance the ball. Following a lengthy huddle and unnecessary pre-snap motion, Daniels scrambled, leading to a tackle by the Giants with three seconds remaining. Washington was unable to line up properly to spike the ball, and the clock expired, resulting in the tie.
Quinn absolved Daniels of blame, stating the responsibility for clock management was his. Daniels, however, took ownership, acknowledging the offense's failure to stop the clock and relay the situation. "It starts with everyone, top down. Ultimately, it's on me," Daniels said.
Tomlin avoided singling out any specific individuals, instead focusing on the missed opportunities for both the Giants (3-1-1) and Commanders (1-3-1). He lamented the loss of a "precious" division win that was within their grasp. Skattebo, acknowledging his own fumble, expressed a sense of relief that the game ended in a tie, suggesting it might mitigate the consequences he would have faced from coach Harbaugh.
