Tomato Paste Consumption May Enhance Brain Connectivity, Study Suggests

Consuming two tablespoons of tomato paste daily for three months may lead to significant improvements in cognitive function, according to a recent clinical trial conducted in Spain. The study, published in the journal Antioxidants, explored the impact of tomatoes on the cognitive abilities of healthy middle-aged adults, with a particular focus on the antioxidant lycopene.

Lycopene, the natural pigment responsible for the red color of tomatoes, is a potent antioxidant known for its role in protecting cells from damage. This trial is reportedly the first to link changes in lycopene levels with alterations in functional brain connectivity.

The research involved 42 adults who were divided into two groups. One group incorporated 35 grams (approximately two tablespoons) of tomato paste into their daily diet, while the other followed a diet that restricted lycopene-rich foods such as tomatoes, watermelon, papaya, grapefruit, and guava. After three months, participants underwent cognitive testing. A subset of 14 participants also had brain scans.

The findings suggest that the group consuming tomato paste experienced enhanced selective attention and improved associative memory, which is the ability to learn and recall connections between unrelated items. Furthermore, the study observed an increase in brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) in this group. BDNF is a protein crucial for neuron growth, the formation of new connections, and neuroplasticity, which is the brain's capacity to adapt and recover.

While the brain scan results were noted as preliminary due to a smaller sample size, they indicated potential changes in the connectivity of large-scale brain networks responsible for cognitive function and attention. The tomato paste group showed lower synchronization in these areas, while the group with restricted lycopene intake exhibited reduced resting-state connectivity in attention-related brain regions.

Researchers noted that these neural changes suggest that tomato consumption could promote a reorganization of brain networks, potentially increasing neural efficiency and adaptability by pruning unnecessary connections. These findings align with previous research, including a study where a tomato-powder supplement rich in carotenoids improved processing speed, attention, and working memory in older adults.

However, the study authors acknowledge that isolating the precise effect of lycopene is challenging due to the complex mix of vitamins and antioxidants present in tomatoes. They also emphasized that the current study does not definitively prove a cause-and-effect relationship between tomato consumption and direct improvements in brain function. Further larger-scale and longer-duration studies are required to confirm these cognitive benefits and their long-term impact.
