Tom Welling Recounts 'Smallville' Revival Hurdles Amidst Accidental Naked Reflection
The 'Smallville' star discusses the challenges of reviving the series and a recent social media mishap.
Tom Welling, known for his role as Clark Kent in "Smallville," recently shared a personal anecdote about his attempts to revive the beloved series, alongside a social media blunder that garnered significant attention. Welling, 49, has been working with co-star Michael Rosenbaum to bring "Smallville" back, but they have encountered resistance from Warner Bros.
"We want it to work," Welling told Screen Rant in November 2024. "The honest answer is we have not been able to get Warner Brothers to give us the thumbs up. We need their permission."
He described the situation as unusual, noting a lack of response from the studio. "We haven't even gotten a response," Welling explained. "It's the weirdest thing because it is more of a fan-driven idea. It's not going to be a blockbuster. It's not going to be a financial windfall for any of us."
Despite the studio's apparent lack of interest, Welling expressed a continued desire to collaborate with his former castmates. "We all like each other, we all like working together, and if we could do it, it'd be fun," he said. He added that Warner Bros. has not prioritized the project, likening the situation to "a not-returning-phone-calls-thing."
Welling's comments came in the wake of an incident where he accidentally posted a naked reflection in a hotel window to his Instagram Stories. The actor was in New York City for New York Comic Con to celebrate the 25th anniversary of "Smallville" with co-stars Kristin Kreuk, Erica Durance, and Michael Rosenbaum. He shared a photo of the city skyline, but unbeknownst to him, his reflection was clearly visible. The post remained online for approximately 10 hours before being deleted.
"Smallville" originally aired from 2001 to 2011, chronicling the early life of Clark Kent in Kansas before he became Superman. Welling has previously expressed openness to a cameo as Superman in a future Batman film, particularly if Robert Pattinson were involved, citing their friendship.
In addition to his "Smallville" podcast, "TalkVille," with Rosenbaum, Welling's recent acting credits include the film "Chasing Summer." In 2020, he relocated with his wife and sons to a ranch in Northern California, seeking a more peaceful environment away from Los Angeles.
