Tom Cruise Transforms into Aging Oil Tycoon for New Film 'Digger'

Tom Cruise is unrecognizable in his upcoming film "Digger," where he portrays an aging oil tycoon. The transformation involves extensive prosthetics, including a fake pot belly and thinning white hair, a departure from his typical action-hero roles. The film, directed by Alejandro González Iñárritu, sees Cruise as Digger Rockwell, a billionaire who accidentally triggers a global ecological crisis. The US President, played by John Goodman, tasks Rockwell with saving the planet in what is described as a "comedy of catastrophic proportions."

Cruise's transformation required him to spend considerable time in hair and makeup. Initially, the process took six hours daily, but Cruise worked with the team to streamline it. "The first time we did the makeup, it took six hours," Cruise explained on the "New Heights" podcast. "I had a guy there with a stopwatch and I'm like, 'Okay, you see that time, six hours? By the time we're done, we're going to get it under an hour.'" He added that he developed cooling systems to manage the heat and discomfort of the extensive makeup and bodysuit required for the role.

Notable Actor Transformations

Cruise's dramatic makeover is one of several notable instances of actors undergoing significant physical changes for their roles. Jacob Elordi transformed into the Creature for Guillermo del Toro's "Frankenstein," a process that involved applying 42 separate prosthetic pieces over approximately ten hours each day. Christian Bale famously lost 62 pounds for his role as an emaciated character in "The Machinist," surviving on a diet of about 200 calories per day.

Other actors have also undergone remarkable transformations. Jessica Chastain's portrayal of Tammy Faye Bakker in "The Eyes of Tammy Faye" involved heavy makeup and prosthetics that she said caused her skin to stretch and left her concerned about circulation. Sydney Sweeney gained approximately 30 pounds and underwent intense training for her role as boxing legend Christy Martin in "Christy." Brendan Fraser wore a 300-pound "fat suit" filled with airsoft pellets, dried beans, and marbles for his role in "The Whale."

Sebastian Stan experienced isolation and fear while portraying a character with facial disfigurement in "A Different Man," utilizing full-face prosthetics designed by Mike Marino. Matthew McConaughey famously lost 40 pounds for "Dallas Buyers Club," subsisting on a strict diet of Diet Coke, egg whites, and small portions of chicken or fish. He later gained 47 pounds for his role in "Gold." Michael Fassbender lost nearly 40 pounds in ten weeks for "Hunger," limiting his intake to 600 calories a day. Chris Hemsworth underwent a significant weight loss for "In the Heart of the Sea," consuming only 500 calories daily to play a shipwrecked sailor.
