Tom Cruise Panicked Over Unauthorized Biography, Biographer Claims

Tom Cruise experienced significant anxiety when he discovered that author Andrew Morton was preparing an unauthorized biography about him in 2007, according to his biographer and friend, J. Randy Taraborrelli. Taraborrelli shared the anecdote on his Substack, detailing how Cruise repeatedly contacted him seeking guidance.

Taraborrelli, who had interviewed Cruise numerous times over the years, initially missed calls from the actor due to illness. When he finally answered, Cruise expressed urgency. "Tom! What’s going on? Why have you called me thirty times?" Taraborrelli recalled asking, to which Cruise responded, "I only called you once."

Cruise reportedly requested an urgent meeting at his Beverly Hills estate, where Taraborrelli met Katie Holmes for the first time. Cruise appeared visibly unsettled, Cruise explained his distress over Morton's impending book. Morton is known for his biographies of public figures such as Princess Diana, Meghan Markle, and Angelina Jolie.

Taraborrelli advised Cruise to "let it happen. You can’t control it." After further discussions, Cruise apparently accepted this approach. Upon the biography's release, Cruise sent Taraborrelli a bottle of Macallan whisky with a note that read: "Let it happen."

In a 2008 interview with Page Six, Morton acknowledged that Cruise's lawyer had sent him a "hostile letter," which he described as a standard response when Cruise's life is being investigated. Morton admitted to concerns about potential lawsuits, noting Cruise's litigious nature and the tendency of Scientologists to pursue legal action. However, he also stated that the threat of a deposition could serve as a deterrent.

A representative for Tom Cruise did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
