Tom Cruise Confirms 'Intense' On-Set Reputation: 'The Rumors Are True'

Actor Tom Cruise has acknowledged that the long-standing rumors about his demanding and intense behavior on movie sets are accurate. In a recent interview with GQ, Cruise confirmed his reputation and stated that he makes his expectations clear to collaborators before they join a project.

"I expect a lot and I'm up-front about it," Cruise told GQ. "It's like: 'The rumors are true. And do you want this?'" He added with a laugh, "Trust me, the rumors are true. I'll be here before you. What experience do you want?"

Cruise explained that his intensity is not something he adopts solely for the camera, but rather a characteristic he has possessed since childhood. "Even when I was a kid, they were like, 'Oh, come on, Tom. You're so intense.' I'm like, 'I don't know what to say. I am intense,'" he remarked. He also noted that he maintains a sense of humor about it.

For Cruise, this intensity stems from a deep-seated curiosity and a drive to master his craft. "When I'm interested in something, I want to learn it. I want to understand it," he said. "And you want to blast through the confusion and kind of build up that ability."

This dedication has contributed to Cruise becoming one of Hollywood's most prominent action stars. However, he emphasized that filmmaking encompasses more than just stunts and box office success. "I say, 'Understand the tools, then go create what you want to create,'" he stated.

Cruise also shared his perspective on the evolving landscape of cinema, contrasting the communal experience of watching a film in a theater with the rise of television and streaming services. "I have nothing against cable or TV or Netflix. I think it's great. Create jobs and everything," Cruise said. "But what I like about cinema is it is all of us coming together in a room and sharing an experience."

When not actively filming, Cruise dedicates his time to preparing for future projects. "You know what? I'm preparing for the next. I'm always studying something. I'm always learning something, always," he said. He stressed that the groundwork for a film can span years before production begins.

Throughout his career, Cruise has performed numerous daring stunts, including riding motorcycles off cliffs and hanging from airplanes. When asked about his approach to these risks, he responded, "Look, I think you could look at my life and go: I like standing on the edge of a cliff physically and metaphorically." He views life as an adventure, driven by a desire to connect with and understand people from different cultures.

Cruise is set to star as oil magnate Digger Rockwell in Alejandro G. Iñárritu's upcoming film "Digger." In the movie, Rockwell's actions endanger the world, and he attempts to prove himself a hero before a self-unleashed disaster consumes everything. This role marks Cruise's first major starring part outside of his well-known "Top Gun" and "Mission: Impossible" franchises in years.
