Tom Brady Lost 20 Pounds Amid Marriage Struggles with Gisele Bündchen, Book Claims

Tom Brady reportedly experienced significant weight loss, shedding nearly 20 pounds, as his marriage to supermodel Gisele Bündchen deteriorated, according to excerpts from Lars Anderson's upcoming book, "Brady: An American Story and the Price of Greatness."

Teammates and coaches grew concerned about Brady's well-being during this period, noting a loss of his usual spirit. "For Tom to lose that much weight, on his frame, it was a lot," former Buccaneers head coach Bruce Arians stated in the book. "It was very clear that the reason for the weight loss was the stress from the personal issues he was dealing with."

Another coach described Brady as looking like an "empty shell," with his "cheekbones had freaking cheekbones." The coach added, "He just seemed miserable, not even close to the Tom we all loved. He was so stressed."

Anderson's book also details attempts by both Brady and Bündchen to salvage their marriage after the birth of their children, Benjamin Rein and Vivian Lake. Bündchen reportedly penned a letter expressing that their marriage wasn't working and that she needed more of his time, attention, and heart. The author claims she also stated her need for more time to focus on her own career, while a teammate questioned Brady's support of her career, noting the imbalances in their relationship given Bündchen's status as a larger international star.

Brady himself made an effort to address the marital issues. In early 2022, he initially announced his retirement from the NFL but later played another season with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers before retiring permanently in 2023. Before the 2022 training camp, Brady took an 11-day leave from the team to meet Bündchen at a private resort in the Bahamas to work on their marriage. However, upon his return, the coach noted that Brady was "an empty shell of who he was."

Ultimately, the efforts to reconcile were unsuccessful. Bündchen is reported to have stated, "We're not compatible," leading to the couple's divorce in 2022, after 13 years of marriage. Brady also has a son, Jack Moynahan, with ex Bridget Moynahan. Bündchen later welcomed a son with Joaquim Valente and reportedly married the instructor in late 2025.
