Tom Brady Faces Accusations of Hypocrisy After Criticizing Sam Darnold's Reaction to Late Hit
NFL fans and social media users called out the former quarterback for hypocrisy, citing his own history of drawing penalties and favorable calls.
Former NFL quarterback Tom Brady drew criticism from fans and social media users after he commented on a late hit involving Seattle Seahawks quarterback Sam Darnold. On Sunday, during a game between the Seahawks and the San Francisco 49ers, Darnold was hit out of bounds by 49ers linebacker Dre Greenlaw. The play resulted in a scuffle, and Greenlaw was ejected for headbutting an opponent who had removed his helmet.
During the broadcast, Brady stated that he did not believe the hit was illegal. "I know they might call a penalty but Dre Greenlaw's on a full sprint to make sure that Darnold's not gaining anywhere near close to the first-down marker, which is exactly what Darnold's doing," Brady said. He added, "And then it's a little nudge out of bounds, and Darnold with the acting... football has changed so much, I know that's a little late as the foot goes down."
Social media users quickly pointed to Brady's history, with many accusing him of hypocrisy. They referenced instances throughout his career with the New England Patriots and Tampa Bay Buccaneers where he allegedly received favorable calls from officials. One user on X posted, "Tom would've complained so much if he took this hit." Another commenter stated, "Truly insane hearing Brady say it's a different game now. The NFL so clearly protected Brady just like they do Mahomes now."
Other comments included, "Brady acting he was getting spiked like Bradshaw when he was playing," and "Pot calling the kettle black," with another user adding, "Like Brady never 'acted.'"
Darnold's performance in the game was also scrutinized, as he threw two interceptions. The 49ers ultimately secured a 32-29 victory after mounting a comeback.
