Tom Brady Criticizes NFL Refereeing in Lions-Packers Game

Retired NFL quarterback and Fox Sports analyst Tom Brady has voiced strong criticism of the officiating in the recent Detroit Lions vs. Green Bay Packers game. Brady specifically targeted head referee Alex Moore's crew, deeming several penalty calls questionable and detrimental to the flow of the game, particularly those involving defensive players.

During the Lions' 20-17 victory, Brady reacted with disbelief to a roughing-the-passer penalty called against Packers defensive tackle Karl Brooks on Lions quarterback Jared Goff. "No, my goodness," Brady said during the broadcast. "What is that?! There's no way!... That's definitely not roughing the passer!"

Brady elaborated, stating that such calls, which moved Detroit into field goal range and ultimately led to the game-winning kick, were unwarranted. "You're just ripping through the line of scrimmage to try to get the quarterback on the ground," he explained. "Look, I love Goff standing there in the pocket, but you just can't tack it on 15 yards."

Fox rules analyst Dean Blandino concurred with Brady's assessment, describing the hit as "teach-tape tackle" rather than roughing the passer.

Earlier in the fourth quarter, Lions linebacker Derrick Barnes was flagged for unnecessary roughness on a play where he made minimal contact with Packers running back Marshawn Lloyd after an incomplete pass. Brady questioned this call as well, arguing that defenders must pursue the ball in a crowded middle of the field and that such calls are often magnified in slow motion.

These criticisms echo ongoing debates within the NFL regarding player safety and the consistency of officiating. Defensive players like former Texans defensive end J.J. Watt and current Packers edge rusher Micah Parsons have also been vocal about similar penalty calls.

Parsons, in particular, took to social media platform X to express his frustration, questioning the league's direction if incidental contact with a quarterback results in a roughing penalty. "[Let's] just go to flag football if everytime (sic) a qb gets touched it's roughing the passer!" Parsons wrote, tagging the NFL and its officials. Green Bay's Brenton Cox Jr. also received a roughing-the-passer penalty in the game.
