Toddler Pulls Loaded Gun at Michigan Daycare; Officer Parent in Custody

Police are investigating an incident at a Canton, Michigan, daycare where a toddler pulled a loaded pistol from a backpack on Monday. A police officer, identified as one of the child's parents, has been taken into custody as part of the ongoing investigation.

No injuries were reported in the event, and Canton Police Chief Joseph Bialy commended the daycare staff for their swift actions in ensuring the children's safety. The handgun involved was not a service weapon.

"I don’t think there was any ill intent by truly anyone involved," Bialy stated. "I think it really falls back on safe security of a firearm, making sure that we know where our firearms are located, that they are not accessible to anyone."

Bialy described the incident, which was captured on video showing the child retrieving the gun from a backpack, as "shocking." He noted that the daycare, despite having existing security measures, plans to enhance its protocols and begin searching all backpacks.

"They had a representative, a teacher, instructor that was in that room the entire time, identified what was happening, and took swift action to intervene," Bialy said. "And had that not happened, I do not know where we would be right now or what kind of conversation I would be having."
