Toddler Killed, Father Injured in Georgia Shopping Center Crash

A toddler has died and his firefighter father was injured after a driver accidentally accelerated over a curb and struck them at a shopping center in Gainesville, Georgia. The incident occurred Wednesday at the Limestone Marketplace.

Off-duty Gainesville firefighter Samuel Skelton was holding his son, Knox Skelton, when the vehicle hit them. Police identified the driver as Teresa Parker, 68, who was attempting to park in a handicap space when she lost control of her 2024 Ford Edge.

“Samuel was there, holding his 22-month-old son, Knox. Had his back to everything, didn’t even know what was coming, didn’t see what was coming,” said Gainesville Police Capt. Kevin Holbrook.

Knox Skelton was airlifted to an Atlanta children's hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries. Samuel Skelton sustained minor injuries and did not require medical attention.

Knox was less than two months away from his second birthday. A fundraiser described him as a child who loved traveling with his monster trucks, visiting parks, and swinging with his father. An obituary noted his affinity for the fire station, where he was known to play like he owned the place and enjoyed riding the fire truck.

The Gainesville Fire Department expressed heartbreak over the incident, asking the community to support the Skelton family. "Samuel and Kiana Skelton are two of the most humble, caring, and genuine people you could ever meet," the department stated. "Our department is heartbroken by this tragedy, and we ask that our community surround the Skelton family with love, prayers, and support as they navigate this incredibly difficult time."

An investigation into the crash is ongoing. Parker remained at the scene and has not been charged, with police classifying the event as a tragic accident.
