A two-year-old boy, Wilson Alexander, was fatally struck by a vehicle on Monday afternoon in his driveway in West Park, Florida. The Broward County Sheriff's Office confirmed the incident.
The driver involved remained at the scene and is cooperating with authorities. The investigation is focusing on a white Chevrolet Suburban. Relatives informed NBC Miami that the boy's mother, identified as Ericka Cante, typically drives a white Chevrolet Suburban, but it is unclear who was operating the vehicle at the time of the incident.
Authorities stated that Wilson was outside the property when he was struck as the vehicle was backing up. Emergency services arrived to find the child with serious injuries. He was transported to a local hospital but succumbed to his injuries.
A photograph from the scene captured a pair of navy blue baby Crocs lying on the driveway following the incident. A neighbor described the family as "family oriented" and stated they had "never seen them kids outside without a parent."
A GoFundMe campaign has been initiated by a relative to assist with funeral expenses. A statement on the fundraising page described the loss of their "beloved little angel" and expressed the family's grief.
The traffic homicide unit is continuing its investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
