Toddler Brings Loaded Gun to Michigan Daycare; Staff Avert Disaster

A loaded gun was discovered in a toddler's backpack at the Children’s World Early Learning Center in Canton, Michigan, on Monday, prompting swift action from daycare staff. The incident, captured on security footage, resulted in no injuries, according to police.

Canton Police Chief Joseph Bialy commended the daycare staff for their preparedness and decisive actions in securing the weapon. "I've watched the video, and I've seen what their staff did, and they were prepared and ready to remove this firearm and keep all the kids safe there. And I commend them for their actions," Bialy stated. He added that he was comforted by the fact that no one was harmed.

The firearm was reportedly still in its holster when staff intervened. Authorities have not yet disclosed how the child obtained the gun or who its owner is. However, reports indicate that one of the child's parents is a police officer in a nearby community. The other parent was arrested but had not been formally charged as of Tuesday, according to local reports. The Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office is overseeing the investigation into the incident.

In a statement, Children’s World Early Learning Center emphasized its commitment to safety. "We pride ourselves on being one of the safest centers in the Canton area. It is our priority," the statement read. "Although this incident was out of our control, we are very proud of our staff and especially the teacher who responded so quickly. It was an unfortunate incident. No one was hurt and all safety measures were followed. Because of our attention to safety and our strict adherence to protocols, we avoided what could have been a tragedy."

Neighbors expressed shock and concern over the incident. "It's a terrible thing to happen," one resident told WWJ. "The parent should’ve had more control of the firearm. It should’ve been at home, locked up in a safe and impossible for a kid to get near it."
