Todd Blanche has been confirmed as the next Attorney General, securing a crucial victory for President Donald Trump following weeks of intense negotiations. The confirmation passed the Senate by a razor-thin majority, with two Republicans, Lisa Murkowski of Alaska and Susan Collins of Maine, voting against the nomination.

Blanche's confirmation came just before the Senate recessed for August. His nomination faced significant hurdles during his confirmation hearing before the Senate Judiciary Committee, where he addressed questions regarding the Department of Justice's handling of the Jeffrey Epstein files, his personal loyalty to President Trump, and concerns about politically motivated investigations.

The primary points of contention for some Republicans included a tax audit settlement reached by Trump with the IRS and a proposed "anti-weaponization fund" intended to allocate $1.8 billion to victims of "lawfare." Senators John Cornyn of Texas and Thom Tillis of North Carolina reportedly only agreed to support Blanche after receiving written assurances that the "slush fund" would not proceed.

Blanche had advanced from the Senate Judiciary Committee with a party-line vote. Senator Collins cited "several actions" taken by Blanche at the Justice Department that she believed "further eroded the department’s independence." Senator Murkowski expressed concerns over Blanche's management of the Epstein files and the proposed fund, stating, "The country needs an Attorney General who will check the worst impulses of this administration."

The absence of Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, who was recovering from a fall, meant that the Republican party could only afford to lose two votes. Senator Bill Cassidy of Louisiana ultimately cast a vote in favor of Blanche's confirmation.

Blanche's predecessor, Pam Bondi, was dismissed in April, reportedly due to difficulties in indicting political opponents and issues related to the Jeffrey Epstein files.
