Craig Melvin, co-host of NBC's "Today" show, addressed viewers on Friday morning following a security incident where an intruder entered Studio 1A the previous day. Melvin confirmed he was "safe and sound" after a man identified as Andrew Truelove, 41, bypassed security and lunged at him on-set, shouting a racial slur.
"Just a quick moment to address an incident that happened yesterday," Melvin said during the broadcast. "You may have heard that, unfortunately, an intruder made his way into an unauthorized area here in Studio 1A. Thankfully he was apprehended quickly. He was placed under arrest."
The "Today" show is cooperating with the NYPD's investigation into the matter. "We are just very happy that everyone is safe," Melvin added, before transitioning to other news.
Truelove reportedly slipped past security guards stationed near Studio 1A into a restricted area. The interaction with Melvin lasted approximately 8 to 10 seconds. Truelove has been charged with hate crime menacing, hate crime burglary, hate crime criminal trespass, and harassment.
According to a 2023 profile by the LA Times, Truelove previously launched a social media company and later experienced homelessness.
