The "Today" show has issued a statement following a security incident on Thursday where an individual entered an unauthorized area of the studio and confronted anchor Craig Melvin.
According to the statement, the person approached Melvin in a vestibule near Studio 1A. Melvin alerted security, and the individual was subsequently detained by law enforcement without further incident. The network confirmed that there was no altercation or injuries reported.
"TODAY is cooperating fully with law enforcement as they investigate the matter," the statement read. "NBC and TODAY take the safety and security of our employees, talent, staff and guests extremely seriously."
The "Today" show also stated that it is reviewing the incident and its security protocols to ensure a safe environment for everyone at its studios.
Page Six confirmed that the intruder, who was wearing a backpack, made their way to a staircase inside the studio but did not enter the actual studio space. The individual reportedly asked Melvin for weatherman Al Roker.
The New York Police Department confirmed to Page Six that a person was in custody. A statement from the NYPD indicated that officers responded to a report of a disorderly person inside 30 Rockefeller Center.
TMZ reported that the intruder lunged at Melvin and used a racial slur during the encounter. Melvin and his co-anchor Al Roker did not address the incident on air during Thursday's broadcast.
The incident occurred as the "Today" show also featured other segments. Melvin interviewed actors Anne Hathaway and Tom Holland. Co-host Savannah Guthrie announced she would be off the show for several weeks to film an upcoming "Wordle" show executive produced by Jimmy Fallon. Guthrie had previously taken a two-month hiatus earlier in the year following the disappearance and suspected kidnapping of her mother.
