Titans Release Jordan Elliott After Player Pulls Gun at Facility
Coach Robert Saleh calls the incident a 'terrible lapse in judgment' and a 'call for help.'
The Tennessee Titans have released defensive tackle Jordan Elliott following an incident at the team's facility where he retrieved a gun from his car after a dispute with a teammate. Coach Robert Saleh confirmed the release Wednesday, describing the action as a "terrible lapse in judgment that I recognize as a call for help more than a criminal act."
The team had initially announced Elliott's release Tuesday, citing only his involvement in an unspecified incident that occurred five days prior. A person familiar with the situation, speaking on condition of anonymity, confirmed to The Associated Press that Elliott had gone to his car to retrieve the firearm after an altercation with another player.
Saleh defended Elliott's character, stating, "He’s a good man. Made a terrible, had a terrible lapse in judgment that I recognize as a call for help more than a criminal act. He’s never committed a crime in his entire life and he pulled a gun, in the parking lot."
Right tackle JC Latham, who was involved in the practice field dispute, characterized the event as unfortunate. "I don’t really have too much to say about it," Latham said. "There ain’t never been no bad blood between us two. We were here on the summer getting treatment. Before that, we hung out whenever we were in the same city together. We actually had never had an argument leading up to it."
Elliott appeared in five games this season for the Titans, with one start, recording 11 tackles. He joined Tennessee in the offseason on a two-year, $8 million deal after two seasons with the San Francisco 49ers. He was originally selected by the Cleveland Browns in the third round of the 2020 NFL draft.
The NFL prohibits firearms at club facilities, stadiums, team hotels, and on team transportation. The league has been notified of the incident and is conducting a review.
