A small Yorkie mix named Burt has survived a harrowing two-week ordeal lost in the Southern California wilderness, navigating terrain populated by rattlesnakes, coyotes, and mountain lions. The 9-pound dog, Burt, went missing near Thousand Oaks and was eventually recovered after covering an estimated dozen miles.
Burt, a rescue dog originally from Bakersfield, was being transported to a foster-to-adopt home when he became frightened during loading and bolted, with his harness and leash still attached. By the time search efforts began, he had already disappeared. Volunteers and animal lovers launched an extensive search, posting flyers, setting traps, and following reported sightings.
During his time lost, Burt reportedly crossed the major 101 Freeway during rush hour, navigating eight lanes of traffic. There were also unconfirmed reports of him being hit by a bus, while others believed they had seen him escape. Pet lovers documented Burt's journey, sharing updates when he was spotted, and videos tracked his movements. At one point, there was a six-day stretch without any sightings, leading to fears for his safety.
Sustaining his survival, Burt narrowly escaped a pair of coyotes by hiding under a car before heading toward a golf course. A close call with a mountain lion was also captured on video in the area. The search team from Dog Days Search and Rescue set up cages with water and cameras, which ultimately led to Burt's recovery on his 14th night when he was found inside one of the traps.
Burt's survival is considered particularly remarkable given the recent increase in rattlesnake activity in the region. Video footage from the same area documented two rattlesnakes engaged in a territorial dispute, highlighting the potential dangers Burt faced.
