TIME, in partnership with Statista, has released its second annual ranking of "America’s Top Venture Capital Firms 2026," recognizing 350 firms deemed leaders in the U.S. venture capital landscape. The methodology, refined from the previous year, incorporates feedback from the venture capital community to better assess firm success.

Methodology Pillars

The ranking is determined by a scoring system based on four key pillars. The largest weighting, 40%, is given to "Performance & Conviction," which evaluates a firm's ability to identify and support successful companies from early stages through follow-on investments. This pillar now utilizes deal-level data to trace outcomes and portfolio company behavior.

"Fundraising Strength" accounts for 30% of the score, analyzing total capital raised over one-, five-, and ten-year periods, with an emphasis on fundraising momentum. The inclusion of a ten-year horizon aims to balance sustained track records against single strong vintage years.

"Investment Capacity & Activity" makes up 20% of the score, reflecting a firm's operational capacity and the pace of capital deployment. This is measured by assets under management, available capital, and deal volume across one-, five-, and ten-year windows. New to this edition, deal volume highlights not just capital held but also the rate at which it is invested.

The final 10% is allocated to "VC Leadership," a new pillar this year. It measures a firm's engagement as an active partner, evidenced by its frequency in leading investment rounds and securing board representation in portfolio companies.

Eligibility Criteria

To be considered for the ranking, firms must be headquartered in the United States. A core part of their business model must involve raising third-party capital and deploying it as direct venture capital funding to companies and startups across various stages and sectors. Firms primarily focused on growth equity, private equity, fund-of-funds, venture debt, or similar non-venture capital strategies are excluded from eligibility.

Statista collected and analyzed data for over 3,000 firms through desk research, online applications, and collaborations with data intelligence companies. The 350 firms with the highest overall scores were included in the final "America’s Top Venture Capital Firms 2026" list.
