The Timber Fire in Big Sur has rapidly expanded, consuming over 1,700 acres and prompting authorities to close a substantial 16-mile section of Highway 1. The wildfire, which began Saturday night, is currently only 5% contained.

The California Highway Patrol has closed Highway 1 between Point Sur Lighthouse and Partington Canyon. Evacuations are underway, though residents are being permitted passage through the closure to reach safety.
