Tim Westwood Faces 17 Sex Offence Charges from Nine Women
The former BBC Radio 1 DJ has appeared in court charged with multiple sexual offenses allegedly committed over a 33-year period.
Former BBC Radio 1 DJ Tim Westwood, 69, is facing 17 charges related to sexual offenses involving nine women, with alleged incidents spanning from 1983 to 2016. Westwood appeared in court to address these allegations.
In September, Westwood was charged with indecently assaulting a teenage girl in 1991 and sexually assaulting an 18-year-old woman in 2004. He had previously pleaded not guilty to four counts of rape, nine counts of indecent assault, and two counts of sexual assault, and is scheduled to stand trial at Southwark Crown Court in January.
The latest charges include alleged incidents in south-west London, with the teenager reportedly assaulted in Hammersmith and Fulham, and the young woman in Wandsworth. Westwood's initial charges in October of the previous year encompassed 15 offenses, including three indecent assaults allegedly occurring at the BBC in the 1990s and a rape in a hotel in 1996.
Further accusations include two indecent assaults and one count of rape from the early 2000s at a London address, and two counts of rape at a London address in the 2010s. He is also accused of sexually assaulting a woman at a nightclub in Stroud, Gloucestershire, in 2010.
Following the September charges, Catherine P Baccas, deputy chief crown prosecutor for the Crown Prosecution Service, stated that the new charges were based on separate reports from 1991 and 2004 involving two additional women. She emphasized that prosecutors had determined sufficient evidence existed to proceed with these charges and that it was in the public interest. Baccas also reminded the public that criminal proceedings are active and the defendant is entitled to a fair trial.
Detective Superintendent Andy Furphy of the Metropolitan Police acknowledged the trust placed in them by the reporting women and affirmed the commitment to providing support. He also noted that independent support is available through Rape Crisis.
