Tim Westwood Faces 17 Charges in Sexual Offense Case

Former BBC Radio 1 DJ Tim Westwood, 69, has appeared in court to face a total of 17 charges related to alleged sexual offenses against nine women. The alleged incidents span a 33-year period, from 1983 to 2016.

Westwood was previously charged in September with indecently assaulting a teenager in 1991 and sexually assaulting a woman in 2004. He has pleaded not guilty to four counts of rape, nine counts of indecent assault, and two counts of sexual assault. His trial is scheduled for January at Southwark Crown Court.

The latest charges involve alleged incidents in south-west London, with the teenager reportedly targeted in Hammersmith and Fulham and the young woman in Wandsworth. Westwood was initially charged last October with 15 offenses, including three indecent assaults allegedly occurring at the BBC in the 1990s and a rape in a hotel in 1996.

Additional accusations include two indecent assaults and one count of rape at a London address in the early 2000s, as well as two counts of rape at a London address in the 2010s. He is also accused of sexually assaulting a woman at a nightclub in Stroud, Gloucestershire, in 2010.

Catherine P Baccas, deputy chief crown prosecutor for the Crown Prosecution Service, stated that the new charges follow an investigation by the Metropolitan Police and relate to separate reports involving two additional women. She emphasized that prosecutors have determined there is sufficient evidence to proceed with these charges and that further criminal proceedings are in the public interest. Baccas reminded the public that criminal proceedings are active and the defendant is entitled to a fair trial.

Detective Superintendent Andy Furphy acknowledged the trust placed in the police by the women who have made reports and committed to providing them with support. Independent support is also available through Rape Crisis via its 24/7 Rape and Sexual Abuse Support Line.
