Actor Tim Robbins has issued a blunt critique of the Democratic Party, urging its members to "get their stuff together" and provide voters with more compelling reasons to support them.
Robbins shared his assessment during a recent appearance on the "SmartLess" podcast. He expressed dissatisfaction with the current political landscape, stating, "I personally am not a happy guy with either [party]." He added, "There got to be better ideas and better, you know, better motivation for people to vote for Democrats. They have to get their stuff together. They really do."
The "Shawshank Redemption" star also reflected on his 1992 directorial debut, "Bob Roberts," a satirical film about a conservative politician. Robbins noted the film's themes have become increasingly relevant in contemporary politics.
Robbins suggested that political outrage can serve as a substitute for purpose, describing a phenomenon where individuals begin their day by seeking out figures or events to fuel their anger. "The idea that you can find your worth and purpose and virtue by hatred is this terrible, terrible idea," he said. He argued that directing animosity towards an abstract concept or idea, rather than an individual, is particularly detrimental.
He emphasized that this reliance on agitation is not exclusive to one political side, noting, "So I feel like there's too many people that wake up agitated about political figures… on either side and it's not a good way to start your day."
Robbins previously discussed his own struggles with political anger and polarization in July, recounting an ayahuasca experience that he said helped him release anger related to societal divisions. He stated his intention for the experience was to stop being consumed by anger about global events.
