Tim Matheson, Star of 'Animal House' and 'Virgin River', Spotted in Los Angeles
The Emmy-nominated actor, known for his iconic roles, was seen enjoying a casual outing in Burbank.
Tim Matheson, the Emmy-nominated actor recognized for his role as Eric 'Otter' Stratton in the 1978 comedy classic Animal House and his current part as Dr. Vernon Mullins in the Netflix series Virgin River, was recently seen during a rare public outing in Los Angeles. The 78-year-old actor was spotted at the Verdugo Aquatic Facility in Burbank, engaging in a leisurely swim.
Matheson maintained a casual appearance, wearing a plain black short-sleeved shirt, blue sweatpants, and black sneakers. He was observed carrying a backpack and a colorful towel as he entered the facility. Later, he was seen relaxing in a chair under the sun while looking at his phone.
Born in Glendale, California, in December 1947, Matheson began his acting career as a teenager. His first credited role was in an episode of Window On Main Street in 1961. Throughout the 1960s, he took on minor roles in television shows such as Leave It To Beaver, My Three Sons, and Jonny Quest.
In 1967, Matheson appeared in the satirical comedy film Divorce American Style alongside Dick Van Dyke and Debbie Reynolds. The following year, he was cast in the family comedic-drama Yours, Mine And Ours, starring with Lucille Ball and Henry Fonda. Reflecting on his time working with Ball on the podcast Still Here Hollywood, Matheson recalled her habit of retreating to her trailer between takes, contrasting it with the more traditional set presence of other actors.
Matheson's career continued through the late 1960s and 1970s with guest appearances on numerous television series, including Adam-12, Bonanza, and Hawaii Five-O. His pivotal role in Animal House in 1978, alongside John Belushi and Donald Sutherland, proved to be a significant success, with the film earning approximately $141 million against a $3 million budget.
Further film credits from that era include the war comedy 1941 (1979), To Be Or Not To Be (1983), Impulse (1984), and Fletch (1985). During the 1990s, Matheson expanded his television work with roles in TV movies and the 1996 comedy A Very Brady Sequel.
In the early 2000s, he appeared in series like The King Of Queens and Without A Trace. From 1999 to 2006, Matheson portrayed Vice President John Hoyes in The West Wing, a role that earned him two Emmy nominations for Outstanding Guest Actor in a Drama Series.
He later played Dr. Brick Breeland on The CW's Hart Of Dixie and made appearances in shows such as The Good Fight, The Affair, and This Is Us. Since 2019, Matheson has been a regular on the popular Netflix series Virgin River, playing Dr. Vernon Mullins. The show was renewed for its eighth season in July of the previous year.
In a recent interview with Parade, Matheson discussed Virgin River, describing the series as a throwback that emphasizes community support, comparing it to The Andy Griffith Show and the fictional town of Mayberry, where people genuinely look out for one another. Most recently, Matheson also appeared in five episodes of the series 9-1-1: Nashville.
