A viral TikTok video has ignited a widespread debate over airplane etiquette, specifically concerning the act of reclining one's seat. Mark Roberts, an American content creator with over 1.5 million followers, shared his experience on a flight to Germany where a fellow passenger objected to him reclining his seat.

Roberts stated in his video, "If you are on an airplane and you want to recline your seat, you do not have to ask permission from anyone." He recounted that an hour into the flight, as cabin lights dimmed for rest, he began to recline his seat. According to Roberts, a woman behind him appeared and complained that he had not asked for permission and that she "don't have much space back here."

Roberts suggested the woman also recline her seat, which he described as frustrating and annoying. The situation escalated when the woman summoned a flight attendant, complaining about Roberts reclining. The flight attendant initially informed the woman that Roberts was within his rights to recline his seat. However, to ease tension, the attendant asked Roberts if he would move his seat upright because the woman was "super uncomfortable."

When asked if he had to comply, Roberts was told no. He then responded, "Well then I think I am going to stay reclined." The woman reportedly reacted with further distress, "throwing another hissy fit in German" and subsequently kicking his seat for the remainder of the flight.

The video, which garnered over 99,500 views, prompted a polarized reaction from viewers. Many sided with Roberts, arguing that if a seat feature exists, it is intended for use. One comment read, "If you want more space you pay for a seat with more space." Others pointed out, "I feel like it wouldn't be a feature if you weren't supposed to use it?"

Conversely, a significant number of commenters supported the woman's perspective. Arguments included, "Well imagine you got reclined on and you have zero space," and "That's just selfish as f**k." Another commenter stated, "I'm on her side. It's manners."
