A British TikTok influencer, Brooke Keisha George, 23, is facing a potential firing squad in Dubai after being charged with the premeditated murder of her boyfriend, Bill Treeby, 26. George's family and a human rights group allege she acted in self-defense after Treeby became violent and confiscated her passport.
Treeby, who had a previous conviction for assault in the UK and was awaiting trial on drug charges, was found dead after an incident at his Dubai apartment on June 22. His family, including his wife Ellie, has expressed devastation over his death.
Brooke George, who has over 100,000 TikTok followers, was reportedly lured to Dubai by Treeby after meeting him online. Her mother, Tess George, claims her daughter was subjected to increasing control and abuse by Treeby during her second visit to Dubai, which began earlier in June. According to Detained in Dubai, an organization assisting George, she discovered Treeby had booked her a one-way ticket, causing her alarm.
The incident reportedly occurred after a night out. George alleges Treeby assaulted her in a car and later at his apartment. She claims she feared for her life and grabbed a kitchen knife in self-defense. After the altercation, she fled the apartment with her passport and phone, intending to go home. She was arrested at the airport.
Detained in Dubai CEO Radha Stirling stated that George should be treated as a victim of violence and that her allegations and documented injuries warrant a thorough investigation. George's mother has appealed for help, expressing fear that her daughter will not receive a fair trial and detailing a distressing experience in Dubai's Bur Dubai Police Station.
Meanwhile, Treeby's family is mourning his loss. His wife, Ellie, posted tributes on Facebook, and his mother, Karen, described herself as heartbroken. Treeby's sister, Esther, also shared her grief. The family's anguish is compounded by a history of violence, as Treeby's father was murdered 15 years prior in a case involving his own brother and a property dispute, resulting in murder convictions for his father and uncle.
This case highlights the stark realities that can lie beneath Dubai's glamorous image, particularly for foreigners. Several British nationals have faced severe consequences for legal infractions in the UAE, including lengthy prison sentences for drug-related offenses and consensual sexual encounters. The UAE has maintained a strict approach to law enforcement, especially amid regional instability.
The British Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office has confirmed it is supporting a British national detained in the UAE and is in contact with local authorities and the family.
