The online persona of Chanty Beluga, a TikTok star who has amassed over 120,000 followers and 1.7 million likes in less than a month, is the creation of comedian Courtney O'Donnell. O'Donnell has addressed rumors that the character is an "industry plant" due to her swift ascent and acquisition of brand deals.

O'Donnell, 31, explained that the Chanty Beluga character originated during a late-night brainstorming session with costars on the set of the upcoming comedy "Stephanie, Bride to Be." The initial idea involved simply saying a funny name, which evolved into "Chanty Beluga." The first video, posted on August 9, featured O'Donnell introducing herself as Chanty Beluga and stating she would be reading for the role of Crypt Keeper. This video went viral, prompting O'Donnell to create more content featuring the character in everyday scenarios, such as ordering coffee or getting into an Uber, where she highlights her unique name.

O'Donnell believes the character's appeal lies in its distinctiveness and the mystery surrounding her personal life. "I think it's a response to social media content today, [where] everyone feels like they have to create this content that holds up a mirror to everyone else's experience. And with Chanty, no one else is named Chanty," she told Rolling Stone. Initially, O'Donnell considered crafting a complex backstory but decided against it, preferring to let the internet speculate.

This rapid success has led to accusations, such as one from a user named Taylor, who claimed Chanty Beluga is a "corporate industry plant meme." Taylor cited the quick appearance of brand deals, including a Verizon ad and features in articles, as evidence that "big brands can't rely on true creators anymore." The user suggested the Chanty Beluga persona was created because she is "easily marketable to sell products."

O'Donnell countered these claims in the comment section, stating, "I literally am a comedian and have been posting for five years and this is the first thing of mine that has popped off." O'Donnell has a background in stand-up comedy and is preparing for a one-woman show titled "Planet Courtney" in New York City on August 26. She has also produced a short film and is slated to appear in "Stephanie, Bride to Be" next year.
