A TikTok influencer has ignited an online debate and drawn significant backlash after complaining about a young child playing in the water near her rented beach cabana, claiming the boy was encroaching on her personal space. The influencer, known online as @sarahsstillhere, shared a video with her 18 million followers showing an elementary-aged child in the water near her lounge chair.
"Whose child is this? Why is he in front of our paid cabana? Come get your child?" she wrote on the video, adding in the caption, "Parents really just do not give a single f*** anymore." This post quickly garnered thousands of comments, with many users questioning the validity of her complaint.
One widely shared comment stated, "'Paid "cabana." The ocean is sold separately.'" Another user urged the influencer to "Stop" recording other people's children. However, a minority of comments sided with the influencer, with one person writing, "So you guys can excuse leaving your child unattended near strangers in the ocean, but you draw the line at people wanting personal space?"
Despite the negative reactions, the influencer defended her position in subsequent videos. She reiterated that the child was in her personal space and expressed concern about unattended children near the ocean, particularly those without flotation devices. She referred to the ocean as the "Child Drowning Machine" in one video, explaining that she would not intervene if the child were to drown, as it was not her responsibility to supervise other people's children.
Sarah clarified that her complaint stemmed from her experience on a private beach where she had paid for the specific area in front of her rented cabana, asserting, "I paid for the exact spot that child was sitting in. I paid for no one to be there." She suggested that beach protocols might differ on private versus public beaches.
