TikTok Influencer, Daughter of Notorious Drug Lord, Arrested in Money Laundering Scheme

Michelle Jamileth Macías Penarrieta, 23, a TikTok influencer and the daughter of infamous Ecuadorian narcotrafficker Adolfo 'Fito' Macias, has been arrested in Colombia as part of an investigation into a $25.8 million money laundering scheme. Penarrieta was apprehended on Sunday in Sabana de Torres alongside her mother, Inda Mariela Penarrieta Tuarez.

Macias's father, 'Fito', leads the Los Choneros gang, which was designated as a terrorist group by the U.S. last year. He escaped from an Ecuadorian prison in January 2024, where he was serving a 34-year sentence for drug trafficking and murder. His escape prompted Ecuador's government to declare a state of emergency amid widespread violence. 'Fito' was recaptured and extradited to the U.S., where he faces seven charges including drugs and weapons trafficking and could receive 20 years to life in prison. He has pleaded not guilty.

While her father led a criminal enterprise, Michelle cultivated an online persona as 'Queen Michelle,' amassing 65 million followers on TikTok. Her account, which has since been taken down, often featured displays of a luxury lifestyle and stacks of cash. She also pursued a music career, releasing songs on YouTube, with one music video depicting her on a ranch surrounded by horses and luxury vehicles.

Ecuadorian authorities allege that Penarrieta's lifestyle was financed by illicit funds connected to her father's criminal activities. Investigators had previously indicted 17 individuals in March for their alleged roles in laundering money for 'Fito' through at least four companies. Authorities further contend that Michelle and her mother attempted to collaborate with Colombian criminal organizations to facilitate drug and arms trafficking, as well as money laundering.

The mother and daughter had been residing in the town of their arrest for four months, having previously spent time in Bucaramanga and Medellin. Their location was discovered through a surveillance operation before Colombian authorities made the arrests.

Colombian President Abelardo De La Espriella announced the arrests on X, stating that they were the result of a joint effort by Colombian and Ecuadorian authorities, along with the FBI. He added that Colombia would not serve as a refuge for the finances of transnational crime. Ecuadorian President Daniel Noboa commended the operation, emphasizing that the apprehended individuals would face justice in Ecuador for money laundering activities supporting the Choneros' operations.
